Step One: Inquire & Begin your Application

Apply via Ravenna: If you are ready to begin, log in to your Ravenna account and select The Newman School to start your application.

Step Two: Complete a Candidate Profile
Share Your Student’s Background: Complete the Candidate Profile right away in Ravenna. This step is free of cost and it helps our admissions team understand your child’s unique needs, interests, and academic background so we can best support you throughout the process. -
Step Three: Register for a Visit/Event and Interview
Visits are optional but highly encouraged! Virtual interviews are required.
Middle School Visit Days: Register for an interactive Visit Day, where prospective 7th and 8th graders participate in campus activities, meet student ambassadors, and experience daily life at Newman.
Middle School Open House: Register for an interactive showcase featuring a panel discussion for parents and an engaging classroom experience for students.
Coffee Talks: Meet members of our vibrant Newman community at local cafes across Boston for informal conversations and Q&A.
Registration is available under "Register for Events" in Ravenna.
Virtual Admissions Interview & Application Fee: Complete your student’s virtual interview with a member of our admissions team. As part of scheduling this conversation in Ravenna, you will submit the application fee to finalize this portion of your application.

Step Four: Submit Required Documents
These elements must be submitted via Ravenna/SAO.
Parent/Guardian Statement: Complete the parent section in Ravenna or SAO. (If writing in English poses an issue, please contact us admissions@newmanboston.org)
Student Essay: Students are required to submit one piece of writing, ideally no longer than one page. The goal of this document is to show the student's voice via written expression. Students may choose to write about themselves, a passion subject, or something completely different from the norm in an essay, expository, poetry, dialogue, or comparative form. It may be a prior graded paper.
Official Transcripts: Prior two years of academic transcripts plus current-year first-semester grades sent directly by your current school.Please have your school upload these documents to Ravenna or SAO, or have them email them to admissions@newmanboston.org. We are not able to receive transcripts directly from families.
Teacher & Counselor Recommendations:
Current English Teacher Recommendation
Current Math Teacher Recommendation
School Counselor or Administrator Recommendation
Optional: Character or Extracurricular Recommendation (coach, advisor, or mentor)

Step Five: Testing
Standardized Testing Results: Submit official test results with a writing component. We accept the ISEE, SSAT, ACT (make sure to complete the writing section) or state standardized assessment results (e.g., MCAS).SSAT Score Recipient Code: 5314ISEE, ACT, and SAT: SAO applicants can email a screenshot of the results to admissions@newmanboston.org.
International students whose first language is not English, or who have not attended a school where English has been the primary language of instruction for the past four years, must submit an English language test (Duolingo, TOEFL, or IELTS). While all three are accepted, the Duolingo English Test is preferred.
If your child has an IEP, 504 plan, and/or a neuropsychological evaluation, please communicate this to Melissa Bacon, Director of Enrollment Management, at mbacon@newmanboston.org.
The Newman School has a diverse student body and disclosure of such information is an important part of the admissions process to ensure that we can support your student. Tour our Back Bay campus, observe Harkness table discussions, visit specialized labs, and complete your candidate and parent interview.
Important Details for Your Visit & Interview:- Candidate Profile: Please complete the Candidate Profile in Ravenna prior to attending your tour and interview.
- Campus Tours: Attending a campus tour is strongly encouraged. Tours for prospective students and parents/guardians are led by a student admissions ambassador. During the 30-minute walk through Newman's two historic five-story townhouses, you will observe active classes and connect with current students and faculty.
- Dormitory Visits: If you would like to tour our student residences on Newbury Street, please notify us in advance at admissions@newmanboston.org.
- Distance / Remote Families: For families unable to travel to Boston, please email admissions@newmanboston.org to arrange a virtual tour option.
- Required Admissions Interviews: A virtual interview is required for all high school applicants. Interviews take place virtually and may be scheduled before or after your campus tour:
- Student Interview: 20–25 minutes
- Parent/Guardian Interview: 10–15 minutes (directly following the student conversation)

International Student Information
For students applying to our High School Boarding Program or international applicants requiring visa support:- English Language Proficiency (Testing Step 5): International students whose first language is not English, or who have not attended a school where English has been the primary language of instruction for the past four years, must submit an English language test (Duolingo, TOEFL, or IELTS). While all three are accepted, the Duolingo English Test is preferred.
The School recognizes that a student's personal motivation to succeed is the best indicator of academic success.
Grade TOEFL Duolingo IELTS 9th Grade 80 110 6 10th Grade 80-90 110-115 6 11th Grade 90 115+ 6.5 12th Grade 90 115+ 6.5 - Transcript Translation (Documents Step 4): All non-English documents must be translated into English. We advise families to have their school email the transcript(s) directly to a translation service. The service can translate the document(s) into English and then create a PDF with the original language transcript and the English translation. This translated transcript can be emailed to the school, who can then upload it to Ravenna or SAO.
- Recommendation translation: If a recommender is not comfortable writing in English, we advise families to have their recommender email the recommendation directly to a translation service. The service can translate the document(s) into English and then create a PDF with the original language transcript and the English translation. This translated transcript can be emailed to the recommender, who can then upload it to Ravenna or SAO.
We are not able to receive transcripts directly from families, who are not allowed to read these confidential documents.- Virtual Interviews & Tours (Events Step 3): International applicants who cannot visit our Back Bay campus in person can request a virtual tour and schedule their required virtual interview through Ravenna or by emailing
