College Planning Timeline
Register for the PSAT.
Follow the Newman's college calendar for colleges visiting Newman.
Continue to visit campus, sign up for webinars, go to college fairs.
Keep up with school work, Junior year is important.
Get involved, do one or two activities you truly enjoy.
Take the PSAT (Preliminary Assessment Test), held at Newman. Strong performance on this test allows students to qualify for National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Consider taking a subject test if you very strong in a subject (Math II for Calculus students, Language and Listening test in November).
Continue your research on schools.
Attend college visits at Newman, online college events and local receptions hosted by colleges.
Consider a taking a practice ACT exam.
Stay on top of your school work, now is a good time to check in with teachers about your classes.
Pay close attention to teachers comments, they offer you a roadmap to success.
Prepare for exams.
Review PSAT results and identify areas for test prep help.
Discuss testing and test preparation options with your family.
Attend a college program overview meeting at Newman.
Consider test prep offered to Newman students.
Complete your Junior questionnaire in Naviance. Identify your goals and backround.
Parents- Complete college questionnaire.
Take timed practice SAT and ACT tests, if you have not already, to determine which one suits you.
Attend college panel with Newman School Alumni.
Begin the College Seminar for all juniors.
Meet with College Counseling to plan school research and visits.
Familiarize yourself with Naviance and use the research tools.
Track colleges and data you have learned about them for future reference.
Register for March SAT.
Develop a preliminary list of colleges and gather information.
Schedule spring break college visits, make your appointments early!
Meet with College Counseling to discuss senior course selection.
Register for April ACT.
Register for May SAT or subject tests.
Use spring break as an opportunity to visit schools,
Keep track of college research/visits; journal, spreadsheet, google docs, take photos!
If you are a division I athlete, register with NCAA clearinghouse.
Identify your recommenders, compose a letter and helpful stat sheet about your activities.
Plan for summer job, college visits, internships or volunteering.
Take timed practice tests.
Begin personal statement idea generation.
Register for June SAT or ACT.
Register for subject tests, if you are taking them.
Begin to note application types and deadlines.
Complete summer college visit plans. Remember to reach out to coaches, professors or departments ahead of time.
Interview at schools when your are able.
Plan on attending Newman essay workshops.

Participate in Common App Boot Camp.

Look for fall Open Houses at schools you have not seen or want to learn more about.
Meet with College Counseling and your family
Determine if Early Action or Early Decision may be right for you.
Share your timeline and check-in with your recommenders.
Register for fall SAT and ACT dates, October dates are the last for early deadlines.
Attend college representative visits held at Newman School during the fall.
Finish refining personal statement.
Plan any revisits and interviews as necessary.
Review your transcript for accuracy.
Submit transcript request form in Naviance for your schools with early deadlines. They need a two week notice.
Inform the college office of schools who do not use the Common Application.
If you will apply for Financial Aid, complete your FASFA and a CSS profile form, based on your school list.
Finish refining supplemental essays.
Submit Applications for November 1 - November 15 deadlines.
Update your college list on Naviance, if necessary.
Save all confirmation emails after you submit an application.
Keep track of your account logins.
Keep electronic copies of your applications.
Check in with college office about scholarships, deadlines etc.
Continue completing FASFA and/or CSS profiles.
Stay focused on school work and exams.
Notify college office if you get ED/EA news.
Submit remaining applications.
Complete your FASFA. Parents' tax forms will be necessary.
Check with college office and resources for scholarships.
Inform the college office of any fall awards you receive to be included in your mid-year transcript.
Notify college office of decision letters.
College interviews, by invitation.
Monitor Application portals for news and updates.
Review acceptances.
Review Financial Aid reports and offers.
Attend revisit days at schools you are considering.
Discuss options and choices with Newman college office.
Mail your deposit by May 1st.
