New Head of School Announcement
We are excited to welcome Michael J. Schafer as Newman School's next head of school effective July 1, 2020. Michael J. Schafer has been appointed incoming head of school by Dr. David MacLaughlin, Chair of the Newman Board of Trustees and Chair of the Head's Search Committee, on October 28, 2019. In his letter announcing Mr. Schafer’s appointment, Dr. MacLaughlin noted:
"The Board’s unanimous decision to select Michael followed the enthusiastic and unanimous recommendation of the Search Committee, which cited an excellent match of the criteria established by the Search Committee with Mr. Schafer’s experience, skills and leadership style. Michael brings an impressive level of educational leadership to Newman School, including a successful sixteen- year headship at Kimball Union Academy. At K.U.A. he strengthened the school academically, while dramatically improving enrollment and fund-raising."
Michael J. Schafer has been involved with four independent schools over the span of thirty years serving as a teacher, coach, advisor, house parent, senior administrator, and Head of School. Prior to this appointment at Newman, Mr. Schafer was the Head of School at Kimball Union Academy. He is a native of Weston, MA. He attended Colby College, where he earned a BA in Spanish and later went on to Harvard University where he earned an M. Ed. with a focus on Administration, Planning and Social Policy.
