The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

The Newman School, located at 245-247 Marlborough Street in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, is pleased to announce that the International Baccalaureate Organization ibo.org has approved our application to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Only schools authorized by IBO are permitted to offer this course of study. Newman will join 1900 schools world-wide and 638 schools in the United States, in providing its students the opportunity to earn this prestigious diploma. Newman becomes just the seventh school in Massachusetts to offer the Diploma Programme to students.

The Diploma Programme for students aged 16 to 19 is a demanding two-year curriculum leading to final examinations and a qualification that is welcomed by leading universities around the world.

Authorization to become an IB World School is an intensive process that typically takes two or more years and includes site visits by an IB team.

A regular process of evaluation is undertaken by schools that have been authorized.

“We are excited to be introducing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme to our students,” says J. Harry Lynch, Headmaster. “Studying at the IB level puts students and teachers in contact with their peers around the world, and sets a standard of accomplishment for learning which is established through the collaboration of educators on every continent. Increasingly, American colleges and universities are recognizing that IB students are exceptionally well-prepared to successfully handle the rigors of higher learning.”

The Newman School, founded in 1945, provides a college-preparatory course of study to young men and women in their secondary school years. The student body is comprised of 270 students, who come from all over greater Boston, and from 17 countries around the world.

Schools that have been authorized by the IBO to offer one or more of its programmes are known as “IB World Schools”.

These schools-

* share the mission and commitment of the IB to quality international education
* play an active and supporting role in the worldwide community of IB schools
* share their knowledge and experience in the development of the IB programmes
* are committed to the professional development of teachers.

Adding the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is a natural development for the school curriculum, putting the school’s course of study on a par with that of over 1600 other “World Schools” offering the diploma throughout the world.

Newman’s long tradition of providing college preparation to both American and international students will be further enriched by the involvement with IB. IB’s commitment to providing students with a broad and challenging liberal-arts based curriculum, enhanced by the pursuit of core experiences in philosophy, community service, and independent research is consistent with the school’s mission, and in keeping with the intellectual tradition exemplified by the great English educator whose name we bear, John Henry Cardinal Newman.
