Article of Interest from Parents Several parents wrote to share a recent article on The New York Times by Dr. Sherry Turkle at M.I.T. Dr. Turkle has done a great deal of research on "Texting" and has interviewed Newman students as part of her research. Please click for :The flight from conversation Class of 2012 Students are encouraged to donate their "gently used" Newman Oxford shirts to the school - a legacy of sorts. The shirts can be dropped off at the office. All shirts will be dry-cleaned and recycled to new and current students. Parent Meeting Update At April's meeting, parents discussed possible activities for next school year. They would like to resume the popular Chili Cook-Off and Family Walk in November. Parents expressed interest in helping with Admissions by attending the Freshmen Welcome in May and the Open House in October. Parents who would like to help at either event should contact Patricia Lynch .
Mrs. Lynch made two proposals for next year . The first is the opportunity for students to give up their evening use of cell phones and social networking for a period of time and to discuss the experiences during and afterward. This idea is borrowed from Newman rowing coach Nigel Gallagher who suggested it to a crew team he was coaching for an important race. The high school team members were complaining that they were not getting sufficient rest due to the crew training and homework obligations. The team volunteered to give up cell phone and social networking at night for two weeks - with impressive, satisfying, and interesting results. Newman's motto, "let heart speak to heart" establishes the tone for each school day, encouraging students to form mature and stimulating relationships with teachers and peers; and to recognize their individual gifts. It is within this context that students would be encouraged to examine their use of time and their relationships with each other, their families and their school. Building on this mission. Mrs. Lynch's second proposal is a Parent consideration of the topic "The Lost Art of Dating". She suggested inviting Kerry Cronin , professor at Boston College , to speak to parents next fall. Professor Cronin's article "The Courage to Date" is a reflection on the meaning of friendship and what it means to "get to know" another. Cronin's work is in the spirit of Newman's "Cor ad Cor Loquitur" and offers the context for thoughtful discussions with our children about dating. Cardinal Newman "God has created me to do Him some definite service; he has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for nothing. I shall do His work. Therefore I will trust him. Whatever, wherever I am, I cannot be thrown away. If I am in sickness my sickness may serve him; in perplexity, my perplexity may serve him; if I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve him. He does nothing in vain; He knows what he is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, he knows what he is about." Meditations and Devotions" The Newman School, in the heart of a great city, provides a diverse student body a college preparatory, liberal arts education based on Judeo-Christian values, intellectual rigor, and trust, guided by the spirit and philosophy of John Henry Cardinal Newman. The school encourages students to recognize the relationship between personal and intellectual growth, and seeks to nurture the intellect, and instill motivation, kindness, the desire for truth, and moral decision making. We believe that it is only in the context of exploring the possibility of a relationship with God, and acknowledging our responsibilities toward self and community, that we can pursue an education which prepares us for leading fulfilling lives. Newman's motto, "let heart speak to heart" establishes the tone for each day, encouraging students to form mature and stimulating relationships with teachers and peers; and to recognize their individual gifts. Sports, enrichment activities and co-curricular academicprograms provide opportunities for student interaction beyond the classroom. Seeking to take the fullest possible advantage of our location in Boston's Back Bay, we participate in the life of this great city, enriching our students' academic experiences by incorporating the historical, cultural and educational resources of Boston into our curriculum. |
