A minimum cumulative G.P.A. is required to remain in good academic standing. Students with G.P.A.’s lower than the 1.7 minimum requirement are placed on Academic Probation at the mid-point of the semester for the remainder of the semester. In addition, students with a G.P.A. at or above 1.7 but who are either failing a course, or who have multiple deficiency grades (D’s and F’s) may also be placed on Academic Probation and be required to attend a daily homework study. Students on probationary status will meet with their advisors to develop a plan to help improve their academic standing.
In demonstration of their commitment to academic achievement, it is expected that students will adhere to (and families will support) this improvement plan which will include MANDATORY homework study after school every day, and may also include peer tutoring, attendance at extra help sessions, regular meetings with the teachers, advisors, department heads and Dean of Students as deemed necessary, and other interventions that may assist students to improve. Students on academic probation who attain the required minimum G.P.A. may be removed from probationary status at the end of the semester.
Students on academic probation at the end of a semester will maintain probation status until after the mid-point of the following semester. If they achieve the minimum (cumulative) G.P.A. requirement at that time, they may be removed from probationary status.
Students who remain on academic probation for more than two consecutive semesters will be reviewed to determine if continued enrollment at Newman is advisable.
