Spanish I provides students with an introduction to the language by developing listening comprehension skills, beginning with the present tense and laying the foundation for a basic working vocabulary. Short readings provide the opportunity to enhance vocabulary and reinforce the basic grammatical structures covered in the course. Cultural topics relating to the Spanish-speaking world are also explored through readings, films and field trips where appropriate. (single period/year)
Spanish I (honors) provides an introduction to the language and the culture of the Spanish speaking world. Students learn grammatical structure, the present tense and a working vocabulary necessary for self-expression and as a foundation for more advanced study. Culture and history are presented through films, projects and articles of current interest designed to enhance the development of reading skills. A series of regularly scheduled compositions is required, as is a research project on some facet of Hispanic culture. Students are expected to prepare a number of oral and written projects. Spanish II is designed to build on the basic skills introduced in Spanish I. In addition to the text used in Spanish I, listening comprehension and speech development are further enhanced via the video series “Destinos”, a 52 episode serial which will be viewed regularly and reinforced by classroom activities. Active vocabulary will be drawn from the book and Destinos, with grammatical items being presented separately. A variety of cultural units will be presented via readings and films. Cultural units will also provide a springboard from which to generate essays. (single period/year)
