The Social Studies Department presents a curriculum that seeks to define clearly the influence of the Judeo-Christian ethic on the growth of Western Civilization. More specifically, we examine how this tradition influenced the foundation and vision of America. We hope to provide the groundwork for our students’ full participation in our society and economy, to prepare students to be both productive citizens in a democracy and responsible adults who have an awareness of global issues.
Students will study ancient and modern cultures to learn the ideas and values which have shaped civilizations throughout the world, as well as study the history of the United States to provide a basic understanding of our history, geography, government and values. Emphasis will be placed on Newman’s unique location in Boston’s Back Bay and the greater Boston community. A variety of elective courses (i.e. The World’s Religions, Psychology, The History of Boston, etc.) will allow students to develop a further understanding of our city, our country, the world and our responsibilities as virtuous citizens.
