LISTENING, SPEAKING, VOCABULARY, LEVEL 2

Miss Julianne Papetsas Fall 2011

Course Description:
LSV2 is an ESL class that focuses on the development of listening comprehension skills, verbal pronunciation, and a broader vocabulary. Weekly lessons will include exercises that require students to take notes as they watch video lectures and answer listening comprehension questions. Students will be coached through speaking exercises that will help improve pronunciation, and they will complete vocabulary assignments that will help enrich their diction. The intention of this course is to improve the students’ ability to listen to, speak, and understand the English language, both academically and casually.

Required Material:
1. Contemporary Topics: Intro (Provided)
2. Vocabulary Workbook (Provided)
3. Notebook
4. Agenda Book (Recommended)

Goals and Objectives:
The student will be able to . . .
1. Aurally understand and comprehend the English language both in the academic setting and during casual, day-to-day interactions.
2. Define and use a new and expansive set of vocabulary words.
3. Speak the English language fluently and with proper pronunciation.
4. Participate in discussion and debate.

Course Grading/Policy:
Participation (20%) – Since this class so heavily focuses on speaking and listening, students must be attentive and involved in class discussions and exercises. Students must be in class on time everyday and prepared with the required texts and notebooks. Consistent absences are inexcusable and will cause the final grade to suffer. English ONLY is permitted to be spoken in class. Students are expected to treat each other respectfully and offer encouragement and help to one another.

Projects/Presentations (10%) – Students will be expected to develop and deliver a speech or presentation on a given topic. The student must be present in class in order to deliver his/her presentation and listen politely to those of his peers. An unexcused absence or lack of preparation will result in a ten point grade reduction each day the student fails to give his/her presentation.

Tests/Quizzes (60%) – Tests and Quizzes may NOT be made up unless the student can prove that his/her absence was due to an emergency. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped. Cheating on tests/quizzes is strictly forbidden and will result in a grade of zero and a report to the Headmaster. Translators my NOT be used during tests and quizzes.

Homework/Exercises (10%) – Homework will typically consist of workbook exercises. All homework is expected to be completed the day it is due. An uncompleted homework assignment will result in Homework Tutorial.

* Note: Percentage breakdowns may not be exact due to inevitable changes throughout the semester.
