LATIN 1

Course Description
Latin 1 is an introductory course in the study of Classical Latin, the language of the ancient Romans. We will learn the essential vocabulary and grammar skills necessary for simple translation of this ancient language. We will cover some basic tenets of Roman culture and mythology, and students will have the opportunity to learn more about certain aspects through their own individual research. We will also explore and question the importance and influence of the Latin language in our own modern culture.
Required Materials:
• Text: Latin for the New Millennium I; any handouts provided by the teacher.
• Three-ringed binder and lined paper.
Goals and Objectives
• To learn nouns from all five declensions and the proper way to decline them.
• To learn verb conjugations and become practiced in conjugating, including irregular verbs.
• To learn about English words derived from Latin.
• To become practiced enough to advance to Latin 2 and, ultimately, IB Latin.
Grading
• 20% Class Participation. This includes the level of active work in the classroom, attendance, punctuality, and preparation for class each day.
• 10% Special papers, projects, and presentations.
• 20% Homework.
• 20% Quizzes (including POP QUIZZES).
• 20% Tests.
• 10% Midterm and final examinations.
