2009-2010
Course Description: In French II, you will continue to acquire the French language and better understand Francophone cultures. We will work on developing intermediate proficiency in producing (speaking and writing) and interpreting (listening and reading) the French language. You will be immersed in the sounds, words, and expressions of modern French through communicative and interactive class activities and materials from Discovering French (Blanc). We will continue to build on and expand what you have learned in French I. The amount of French spoken (by both the student and the teacher) significantly increases in the French 2 classroom.
Goals and Objectives:
• To correctly employ the main structures of the French language and build on capability of everyday interactions.
• To develop intermediate oral proficiency in French.
• To gain a deeper understanding of French speaking cultures, through the study of language and cultures.
Expectations of the Student:
Attendance - All students are expected to be present and on time for class. It is the responsibility of the student to make-up any work that was missed from an excused absence.
Participation and preparation – All students are expected to arrive prepared to participate in class activities with their texts, materials, and completed homework assignments. Missing or incomplete homework will not be tolerated and will negatively affect your ‘participation and preparation’ grade. In a foreign language class, it is crucial to participate and practice the language. Your actual participation in speaking the language during class time is more important than accuracy!
Assignments and Assessment – In addition to being evaluated on participation, class work and homework, there will be several quizzes, presentations, spoken and written demonstrations during the semester. The lowest of these grades may be dropped. There will also be a midterm and final exam administered according to the Newman School exam schedule. There will be a project (or several mini-projects) each semester that will involve cultural and/or linguistic aspects of French.
Academic Honesty – Cheating of any kind, including plagiarism and online translator use will not be tolerated and will result in a failure grade for the assignment. If a student has used work that is not his or her own, without proper citation, the consequences to academic honesty according to the Newman student handbook will follow.
