Course Description

This course is an extension of Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry with the
inclusion of a unique set of definitions. This course deals with domain, range, inverse functions, sequence, Binomial expansion, Matrices, Vectors in 2 and 3 dimensions, Integration and Application of integration, probability and statistics, basic coverage of differential calculus, and more.

Mathematics SL I is a challenging course intended for students strong in math who may end up majoring in a related field. Class time will be devoted to doing one or two lessons per day. New skills will be discussed and students will be asked to use old skills to formulate the basis for new skills. Homework will be done on a daily basis and students will be given time in class to ask questions regarding the assignment. The regularly scheduled quizzes will be cumulative.

Course Requirements and Required Materials

o TEXT: Mathematics for the international student, Mathematics SL, 2nd Edition,
Haese & Harris, 2009
o Some means of organization (ie. notebook or 1" Binder with dividers)
o Graph and lined paper
o Pencils and pens
o A good eraser
o A graphing calculator

Goals and Objectives

The class will be devoted to covering material in a combination of the lecture format and cooperative learning. The student will acquire both a solid intuitive understanding of the basic ideas of mathematics as well as a fairly rigorous understanding of the theory via proof. In addition to learning concepts and solving problems, the students will learn to become comfortable with presenting their problems solving in a methodical manner.
Course Policies

* Students are required to be in class on time everyday.
* Tardy students are expected to pick up a late slip before coming to class. Students
must be in class before the bell rings.
* Repetition is important in learning and retaining math skills. Homework
assignments must be completed everyday to succeed in this class.
* If a student misses class, the homework assignment is due at the start of class the
day the student returns.
* Students will not be penalized for an incorrect answer on their homework if they
have tried to work out the problem and can show their work. Students will not be
given credit for any homework assignment without showing their work.
* Quizzes will be announced at least two days in advance. If a student is absent on the
day of a quiz s/he must make it up the day s/he returns to school. Exceptions will
be made for students with serious illness or lengthy absences at the teacher's
discretion. Since knowledge in math is cumulative, concepts from previous exams
can and will reappear on later exams.

Grading

Quizzes 70%
Homework 20%
Participation, Effort, and Attitude 10%

o Semester grade is the average of your first and second term grades
o You may choose to retake one quiz each term for a better grade but you must take it
before the next quiz occurs
o The mid-term and final exams are worth 2 quiz grades

Make-ups

* Late HWs will be graded 0, unless for absences
* The policy for missed tests is as stated in the school guidelines.
* Students missing one class should bring to class the HW of the missed class and the
one for the day. For an absence of a few days, e-mail me and see me at the end of
the day.

Honesty

You may work together or use the internet for homework; this can be a great way to learn! If you want to work with a student from another class, you must ask that student's teacher for permission. IMPORTANT: you must give credit somewhere on the page; write their name or website and what projects. If you don't give credit and just copy answers, you don't get credit.
