Course overview:
This course will focus on the essential elements of written English and solidify our understanding of basic literature analysis. We will practice various types of writing such as comparison essays, business writing, and some creative writing with our focus on audience, sentence structure, and mastery of citations.
Objectives:
Students will create a portfolio of five to seven pieces of writing that they feel represent their best work.
Students will meet with me once a month to discuss their writing. Some class time will be provided, but students are encouraged to meet with me during office hours or after school.
Become comfortable writing in English: sentence structure, punctuation, and paragraphs.
Course Materials:
Reason to Write workbook
USB drive
Dedicated journal/ blog for this course (Type1: one full page of writing on a topic discussed in class)
Paper for in-class writing
Grading by quarter
25% Class participation/ homework/ attendance
Missing more than four days will reduce your grade
25% journal writing (type 1) graded by quantity (1page/day)
presented to me at monthly meetings
35% portfolio published (5-7 pieces for Final)
Midterm portfolio (at least 2-3 pieces)
15% quizzes and exams
Course Policies and Expectations:
Active and constructive participation in class discussions and while writing in class.
Instances of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and are grounds for a ZERO on the given assignment. Refer to your school handbook for specific guidelines.
Students will enter the room quietly, take out their journal, have homework ready to be checked off and begin working on the Daily Warm up on the board for the first 5-10 minutes of class.
No gum, food, or beverages in classroom.
